Our History

A legacy of compassion, rooted in love and carried forward by community.

Where Our Story Began

Mt. Carmel House was founded by Raoul and Rose Grossi, members of the Lay Carmelites who were moved by the needs of people facing the end of life without the comfort of home.

With encouragement from physician and Catholic deacon Dr. Fernando Ona, they opened the first Mt. Carmel House on Lorimer Street in Rochester on July 16, 1984.

From the beginning, the vision was simple: offer loving care in a peaceful, family-like environment.

Inspired by Saint Mother Teresa

Her example of humble service and care for people in need remains an important inspiration to our home.

Inspired by Mother Teresa

Saint Mother Teresa’s example of serving people with tenderness and dignity helped shape the spirit of Mt. Carmel House.

Her legacy reminds us that compassionate care is about more than meeting physical needs. It is also about presence, respect, and making sure people feel valued and loved.

A Home That Grew with Its Mission

After opening on Lorimer Street in 1984, Mt. Carmel House moved to Planet Street in Rochester in 1988. In 2014, the home relocated to Frisbee Hill Road in Hilton, where its welcoming, home-like setting continues to serve residents and their families.

Through each move, the mission has remained the same: to provide compassionate comfort care without charge, supported by the generosity of volunteers, donors, and the community.
